Pollution is a word that was a foreign concept once to people,(well in the Palaeolithic or stone age maybe), then humans started getting it’s concept, and now finally the time has come when even a 6 year old encounters this word in his day to day life. It has become the new normal now.
Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that cause adverse changes and destruction. There are many types of pollution like: Air pollution, Water pollution, Noise pollution etc.
Air pollution is the real “bad guy” here as it cannot be avoided, breathing is an involuntary action and we breath air in and out, so with each in and out breath, we take all the contaminants into us, that then become our unpaying tenants in our body and cause an inside mayhem in the body.
Air pollution not only impacts human health in different ways like the exposure to high levels of air pollutants causes respiratory infections, heart disease, stroke, lung cancer as well as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, but there is a growing evidence that air pollution does not just affect our health – it affects our behaviour too!!
In 1976, lead was removed from Petrol in USA, because of the concerns of people that it was contributing somehow in learning difficulties, behavioral problems, lower IQ etc. This is not it, it was also concluded that lead exposure in childhood, increases aggressiveness, impulsiveness and lowering of IQ which in turn can give rise to or influence Criminal behavior.
Taking lead out of petrol has since been linked with a 56% drop in violent crime in the 1990s!
Even a short term exposure to polluted air especially with sulphur dioxide has been associated with a higher risk of mental disorders in Shanghai.
In Los Angeles, a new study has showed that high levels of particulate matter pollution can increase the risks of teenage delinquent behavior in urban areas.
Exposure to air pollutants brain inflammation, and, fine particulate matter is harmful to developing brains, because it can damage brain and neural networks and influence behavior.
So this shows that Air pollution has the capacity of increasing bad behavior and specially in young people.
A study done in 9,360 cities of USA shows air pollution increases crime rate as it goes,
Polluted Air increase Anxiety which can give rise to criminal and unethical behavior.
The study concluded that cities with higher levels of air pollution had higher levels of crime. Another recent study done in UK gives us more insight on this issue as the data for 1.8m crimes over two years with pollution data from London’s boroughs and wards was compared and the analysis considered factors such as temperature, humidity and rainfall, days of the week and different seasons and the researchers found that a 10 point raise in the AQI ( Air quality index) increases the crime rate by 0.9%. Levels of crime in London are therefore higher on the most polluted days. The study found that air pollution influenced petty crimes in London’s wealthiest and poorest neighborhood like shoplifting, pick pocketing etc.
There’s still a lot we have yet to discover and many other shocking discoveries like these are just in line for us to sweep us off our feet but let’s all join hands to atleast try to minimize pollution and specially air pollution as it important for our mental well being too now!!
Let us All make our country Clean and Green as it will also minimize the Crime Scene!!
