Cyber Bullying

With advancement comes greater responsibility.

As much as the use of social media has widened and reached to almost every person of every age, people are showing more negligence towards the responsibility it brings. Thoughtlessly, people of every age, comment on every topic which concerns them or not and without giving a second thought to their choice of words. This situation has caused a significant increase in number of suicidal attempts in Pakistan due to depression and anxiety which is caused by taking those comments to heart.

A model uploads her picture, gets bullied by people who have nothing good to say about anyone and as a result, she tries to end her life taking those mean comments to heart. I have come across almost ten such suicide cases in a week where the root cause was depression and anxiety because of negative comments and trolling on social media.

This makes me raise a question, Has social media liberated us? Or has it caught us by the neck? Why don’t we try to understand the consequences of the negativity that our single comment causes? Why has it become hard to scroll down without commenting on something that does not please us?

People are fragile, and we never know what they are going through in their personal lives behind those screens. Social media was meant to connect the long lost ones; it was meant to bring people closer, not to promote cyber bullying. Suicide is second leading cause of death in Pakistan right now, which means there is one suicide in every forty seconds between the ages of 15 to 29 mostly. Its high time we start to realize our responsibility towards careful usage of social media, which includes putting an end to cyber bullying of any form. One comment of appreciation might bring a smile to someone who has had a bad day.

Spread love and light.
